When serious students of the serial genre get together and discuss which title in particular they consider the best, Captain Marvel is always mentioned. There are many reasons for it’s ongoing popularity. The story line is top notch, the stunts and special effects are still impressive to this day and the Scorpion is arguably one of the best villains of the genre and at the very least the equal of the legendary Crimson Ghost. (RKT 023)
While helping archaeologists on a dig in Egypt, young Billy Batson is given secret powers by a wizard named Shazram. These powers allow Billy to turn into the super hero Captain Marvel.
Set in the murky world of 1940’s warehouses and industrial landscapes, this serial comes from a time that can never return. Captain Marvel must protect the world from the evil Scorpion who is attempting to collect a series of powerful lens’ which will give him total power over all mankind.
It’s hard to not make comparisons with this serial and the 1952 television seriesThe Adventures Of Superman.
Scenes where Captain Marvel bends metal bars and stands in front of henchman as they fire bullets into his chest are a little uncomfortably familiar. Such is the influence of this ground breaking serial.
